Polistes rothneyi is a species of social wasp in the family Vespidae, belonging to the subgenus Gyrostoma. It is known as the largest representative of its subfamily in Russia, comparable in size to the European hornet (Vespa crabro). The wasp is native to regions such as North and East India, Nepal, China, Korea, and Japan. In Russia it was first identified in the far south of Primorsky Krai in 2014. There are various color morphs of this wasp, formerly regarded as separate subspecies. Their nests are remarkably large, with diameters of 12-15 cm, and have a slightly elliptical shape with open cells. These wasps are active during the day and display a unique behavior in which they vigorously vibrate their wings when they feel threatened, producing a loud sound.

This product is ideal for educational purposes. It offers a safe and convenient way to study the structure and characteristics of the wasp without the risk of a sting. Ideal for instructors teaching beekeeping courses. It is also an attractive display model for beekeepers who want to inform visitors at their booth.

Please note: these wasps were obtained through pest control!
