The BeeFun® wooden Zander beehive is a premium-quality hive made from fine pine wood. This Zander beehive, also known as Zanderbeute, is an innovative, purpose-built hive designed for keeping honey bees. A Zander beehive can be made from wood or polystyrene. In this category you will find the wooden version; the polystyrene Zander beehive has its own category. The hive consists of 2 or 3 removable sections: the top is the honey super and the bottom is the brood box (brood chamber). One of the key innovations at the time was that the honey super, including the roof, could be removed, allowing the underlying brood box (brood chamber) to be inspected.
This hive is named after the renowned German zoologist, beekeeper, and bee expert, Prof. Dr. Enoch Detlef Hartwig Zander (1873–1957), who introduced the design around 1900 in collaboration with beekeeper Johann Merz. His contributions to the scientific study of honey bees have gained worldwide recognition. This hive enabled a quicker warm-up of the hive interior, which benefited bee activity, especially for drawing out the honeycomb.
Zander hives are notable for their low height but considerable depth. This design means the brood box (brood chamber) and the honey super are the same size. As a result, you can easily interchange the hive frames between the brood box (brood chamber) and the honey super, making honeycomb renewal very straightforward.
Zander's research led to significant advances in beekeeping, including the discovery of the cause of nosema disease in 1909. He also developed pioneering methods for queen rearing in Germany. Recognition: Enoch Zander's contributions have been widely acknowledged. He authored approximately 500 publications on beekeeping and received various awards, including the Goethe Medal for Art and Science.
The Zander beehive combines scientific research with practical application in beekeeping. For more than a century, it has offered beekeepers a practical and effective way to keep bees and produce honey. For those interested in beekeeping, the Zander hive remains an excellent choice thanks to its proven track record and versatility.
