simplex double-walled 46 x 46 (Belgian)

The Simplex spaarkast is a beehive in the Belgian Simplex size, double-walled (i.e., the front and back are double-walled). This means these beehives have external dimensions of 46 cm x 46 cm and are designed to hold eleven hive frames. Thanks to the double outer wall at the front and back, the Simplex beehive is better insulated. Better insulation helps spring build-up start faster.

What sets this hive (Belgian) apart from other hives?

This hive, consisting of a floor, a crown board, a brood box and a roof, is like the Simplex beehive 46 x 46 cm an excellent hive for a new/small colony if you keep bees with Belgian frames (top bar length typically 40–42 cm). It is therefore a suitable model to start with as a beekeeper. You can easily expand this beehive with additional brood boxes and/or honey supers.

In addition, thanks to the double-walled sides, the hive is better insulated than single-walled hives. This provides excellent moisture regulation. The colony can also be easily inspected by simply lifting off the roof and removing the brood box frames.

The advantages of a double-walled Simplex spaarkast

The Simplex beehive has a number of advantages. For example, the hive forms a single unit. The outside of the brood and honey super(s) also serves as the outside of the hive.

For a complete Simplex spaarkast you also need a roof and a separate floor. The floor includes a landing board and entrance. The landing board is mounted to the floor and is foldable, thanks to a piano hinge. Our floor has a slide-out varroa tray. This allows you to monitor whether the bees are affected by the varroa mite and how severe the infestation is. The varroa mites fall onto the tray.

The varroa mite is something every beekeeper has to deal with; fortunately there are several ways to control it. For example, by using the new oxalic acid vaporizer ‘Varrofix’ or one of our other products, found on this page.

Ordering a beehive

Convinced of the benefits? You can buy a Belgian Simplex beehive via our webshop. We offer no fewer than four different options of the Simplex beehive. For example, you can choose to expand the hive with assembled hive frames, with or without embedded beeswax foundation. In addition, it is also possible to purchase parts separately and the Belgian Simplex brood box frames are also available unassembled.

Prefer a different hive? With us, the choice is huge. We also have Segeberger beehives, a red cedar wooden hive or a hive made of polystyrene. This latter hive is made of very lightweight material, which makes the hive easier to lift compared to a wooden hive. If you like natural beekeeping then the Warré beehive, with single walls, is a good starter hive that requires less equipment (no frames). Another Simplex hive is the Simplex hive with fully double walls: a design with a separate inner and separate outer box and the choice between a pine or red cedar wooden hive. There are so there really are many options among beehives & skeps to browse through and  all parts are also available separately from us.
