The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), also known as the yellow-legged hornet or Asian predatory wasp, is a wasp belonging to the hornet genus and native to Southeast Asia. It is considerably smaller than the European hornet. Queens typically measure about 30 mm in length, males about 24 mm, and workers about 20 mm. Thus, the Asian hornet remains slightly smaller than the European hornet. The species has characteristic yellow tarsi (legs). The thorax is velvety brown or black with a brown abdomen. Each abdominal segment has a narrow yellow rear margin, except the fourth segment, which is orange. The head is black and the face yellow. Regional forms vary enough in color to cause classification problems. A distinguishing feature of the Asian hornet is the yellow tips of the legs. In addition, the thorax of the Asian hornet is not brown, as in the European hornet, but black in color.
