View and study the black shield wasp in razor-sharp detail. The wasp is carefully embedded in clear resin, making every detail of this impressive insect visible. The resin block measures approximately 4 x 4 x 1.5 cm.
The Vespa bicolor, also known as the black shield wasp, is a hornet species described in 1787 by Johan Christian Fabricius. This wasp has been identified as the pollinator of an orchid, Dendrobium sinense (syn. Dendrobium christyanum), which occurs only on the Chinese island of Hainan. Interestingly, the orchid produces a chemical that mimics a honey bee pheromone, attracting this predatory wasp. In addition to its role as a pollinator, Vespa bicolor also hunts honey bees to feed its larvae. This wasp is the most common large wasp species in Hong Kong and is often found near human habitation.
This product is ideal for educational purposes. It provides a safe and convenient way to study the wasp’s structure and characteristics without the risk of a sting. Perfect for instructors teaching a beekeeping course. It’s also a great display model for beekeepers who want to inform visitors at their booth.
Note: these wasps were obtained via pest control!
