Queen Rearing

Beekeepers practice queen rearing for several reasons: to replace queens, to have spare queens, to improve colonies, and/or to breed a specific line of bees. As Imkershop, we therefore offer a wide range of mating nucs, grafting needles, and queen marking supplies. We keep expanding this selection with even more queen-rearing equipment for truly dedicated queen-rearing beekeepers. Looking for a specific product? Let Imkershop know. Chances are we can supply it!

    Queen introduction & transport cages

Queen introduction and transport cages are used to introduce a queen into a bee colony or to transport her from the queen breeder to the beekeeper. Introduction cages allow the bees to become accustomed to the new queen first, reducing the risk of queen rejection by the colony. Imkershop supplies various brands of introduction cages and transport cages such as: Nassenheider and Nicot.

  • MiniPlus mating nucs & parts
    MiniPlus mating nucs & parts

The MiniPlus mating hives are a size larger than the average mating hive. This has the advantage that they can even be used for overwintering. Two hive frames match the dimensions of a half Dadant-Blatt honey super frame. The size of the MiniPlus hive also means the queen is minimally restricted in laying eggs.

  • Apidea queen mating nucs & parts

Apidea mating nucs are ideal for queen rearing; they are lightweight and an attractive brown color. Apidea nucs are known for their clever design and excellent insulation. These nucs are widely used by Buckfast breeders because they are approved for use at mating stations. Of course, they are also suitable for other bee subspecies.

  • Kieler mating nucs & parts

The Kieler mating nuc is a box of German design. It is made from the same material as the Segeberger hives. Inside the box are wooden top bars on which the bees can draw honeycomb. There is also space for a feeder, which can be removed if desired. This creates room for two extra top bars. That brings the total to 6 hive frames in the beehive.

The advantage of wooden mating nucs is that they are more eco-friendly than polystyrene boxes. They are also heavier and therefore better protected against being blown away. The EWK box also falls into this category. This is the box used for the mating of Carniolan bees.
