VarroMed by BeeVital is a treatment to control Varroa mites. It replaces HiveClean. VarroMed can be applied in all seasons. Organic beekeepers can use VarroMed without any problem. The active substances are oxalic acid and formic acid. Do not use during the nectar flow, but it can be applied before and after. The withdrawal period is 0 days; this means the honey super can be placed immediately after treatment. One bottle contains 555 ml. Read more below about application by season. At the bottom of this page you will also find the VarroMed package leaflet.
VarroMed may only be used as part of an integrated Varroa control program. Looking for a complementary treatment method? Try Thymovar, Apiguard or formic acid, more info.

When should I treat my bees with VarroMed in spring?
Treatment should be carried out at the start of the season, as the colony population is increasing, and when natural mite drop is more than 1 mite per day. Repeat the treatment twice (for a maximum of 3 treatments in total) if more than 10 mites are found on the bottom board within 6 days after the first treatment.
When should I treat my bees with VarroMed in autumn?
Treatment should be carried out as soon as possible in late summer/early autumn, as the colony population is declining, and when natural mite drop is more than 4 mites per day. Repeat the treatment twice, 6 days apart (i.e. 3 applications). Repeat the treatment two more times (i.e. up to a maximum of 5 treatments) if more than 150 mites (second-year colonies) or more than 90 mites (first-year nucleus colonies) are found on the bottom board within 6 days after the first application.
When should I treat my bees with VarroMed in winter?
Treatment should be carried out at the beginning of the broodless period in hives with Varroa infestation. In winter, only one treatment may be performed.
When should I treat my bees with VarroMed?
VarroMed should primarily be used when bees have low flight activity (late afternoon, evening). Darkness helps the product spread among the bees. To avoid overdosing individual bees, ensure VarroMed is applied evenly over the bees, especially in the winter cluster. VarroMed must not be used during the honey flow or when honey supers are on the hive. Before use, warm VarroMed to 25 to 35 °C, then shake well. It is recommended to remove any brace comb between the top bars of the frames before administering the product. Do not lift frames during application and for about one week after the last treatment. To determine the Varroa infestation level in a hive, monitor mite drop: mite fall on the hive’s bottom board should be recorded before the first treatment and up to 6 days after each treatment. All colonies placed at the same location should be treated at the same time to minimize the risk of reinfestation.
