The Asian hornet (Vespa Velutina), also known as the yellow-legged hornet or Asian predatory wasp, is a wasp belonging to the genus of hornets and is native to Southeast Asia. It is significantly smaller than the European hornet. Queens typically measure 30 mm in length, males about 24 mm, and workers about 20 mm. This makes the Asian hornet slightly smaller than the European hornet. The species has characteristic yellow tarsi (legs). The thorax is velvety brown or black with a brown abdomen. Each abdominal segment has a narrow yellow posterior margin, except for the fourth segment, which is orange. The head is black and the face yellow. Regional forms vary sufficiently in color to cause classification problems. A distinguishing feature of the Asian hornet is the yellow tips of the legs. Additionally, the thorax of the Asian hornet is not brown, as in the European hornet, but black in color.
