The Varrofix vaporizer is a compact device that slides easily into (almost) all beehives. The height is approximately 6 mm, the width approximately 4 cm, and the length is 28 cm. Using the dosing spoon, spread the required amount of oxalic acid onto the Varrofix vaporizer. Once the Varrofix is switched on, it heats up to sublimate (vaporize) the oxalic acid at exactly the right temperature. After vaporization, the entire hive is coated with an oxalic acid dust. Mites cannot escape this. The mites die within 24 hours when their footpads come into contact with the crystals.

You can find a battery for the Varrofix here, as well as a battery charger/trickle charger.

When you order the Varrofix vaporizer you receive:
* the Varrofix vaporizer
* connecting cable
* a handy 1 g dosing spoon
* a small bottle of oil
* an info flyer/user manual.

Tip: order oxalic acid at the same time if you no longer have it in stock.

Work safely as advised in the bijen@wur guide (free download; see books, manuals).

The beekeeper is strongly advised to wear a protective respirator mask (absolutely do not inhale the vapors and work so that the vapors blow away from you).

More info

Benefits of Varrofix:

  • Vaporizing is done without opening the beehive. The 6 mm vaporizer fits through (almost) any hive entrance.
  • After sublimation, the hive is completely filled with oxalic acid vapor, so no mite can escape
    (Note: oxalic acid vapor does not penetrate capped brood).
  • The Varrofix is very energy-efficient (0.40Ah). With a small 12 Ah battery you can perform 10 vaporization treatments.
  • The Varrofix introduces little heat into the hive; the temperature remains within the oxalic acid sublimation range of 157°C -189°C.
  • Vaporizing is safe to perform and even safer with a timer.
  • Low purchase price compared to other vaporizers.
  • Only 1 gram of oxalic acid needed per treatment.
  • Oxalic acid is a natural product. It cannot cause environmental damage.
    Note: inhalation is extremely dangerous and harmful to the lungs!
  • No resistance develops to the use of oxalic acid.
  • No residues remain in the beeswax or honey.
  • Sublimation is the most efficient way to control varroa.

Tips for use in a plastic beehive:
  • Do not allow the Varrofix vaporizer to come into direct contact with the EPS/plastic material/screened bottom board mesh.
  • Solve this by placing/mounting the Varrofix on, for example, a small plywood board. Let the end of the board protrude about 2 cm beyond the vaporizer.
  • Ensure the oxalic acid does not run off the vaporizer without vaporizing by placing the board/the Varrofix horizontally in the hive before sealing the hive.
