How do you use the Varroa vaporizer?
The VarroaCleaner, or oxalic acid vaporizer, is used to treat winter bees with oxalic acid against Varroa mites by sublimation. Sublimation is a process in which oxalic acid crystals are converted into vapor by a high temperature (250 – 300 degrees). The vapor spreads through the hive / winter cluster. It is safe for the bees.
The treatment is carried out at a temperature between 2 and 10 degrees and is applied only once per generation of bees. Preferably in November or December when there is no or little brood, which is very important when controlling Varroa mites with oxalic acid.
Application
Place the recommended amount of 1 - 2 grams of oxalic acid in the cup of the Varroa vaporizer. Then slide the tray into the hive and connect the device to 12 volts for 2.5 minutes. Then switch off the power and leave the Varroa vaporizer in the hive for another 1 minute.
You can then repeat this procedure for the next hive.
Safety
The beekeeper is strongly advised to wear a protective respirator (half face mask). Never inhale the vapors! Always work so the vapors blow away from you.
Always handle materials with care. If you are unsure about the procedure, consult an experienced beekeeper. Always wear protective clothing when needed and take precautions.
