View and study the black shield wasp in sharp detail. The wasp is carefully embedded in clear resin, making all details of this impressive insect visible. The dimensions of the resin block are approximately 4 x 4 x 1.5 cm.
The Vespa bicolor, also known as the black shield wasp, is a species of hornet described in 1787 by Johan Christian Fabricius. This wasp has been identified as the pollinator of an orchid, Dendrobium sinense (syn. Dendrobium christyanum), which is found exclusively on the Chinese island of Hainan. Interestingly, the orchid produces a chemical that mimics a honeybee pheromone, attracting this predatory wasp. Besides its role as a pollinator, the Vespa bicolor also hunts honeybees to feed to its larvae. This wasp is the most common species of large wasp in Hong Kong and is often found near human habitation.
This product is ideal for educational purposes. It offers a safe and convenient way to study the structure and characteristics of the wasp without the risk of a sting. Perfect for teachers in beekeeping courses. Additionally, it's an excellent model for beekeepers who want to inform visitors at their stands.
Note: these wasps were obtained through pest control!
