Swarm trap

The swarm trap is designed to catch the swarm that wants to leave the beehive. When a swarm is about to leave a skep, a bee beard will form. This is a collection of bees on the skep. They retreat briefly before departing, and this is the moment to mount the swarm trap on the skep. After this, the swarm emerges and is caught in the swarm trap.

Skep beekeepers often know when a swarm is about to emerge, and with this swarm trap you can catch and keep your valuable swarm. In Germany, this is traditionally used on the Lüneburger Stülper among others.
