Sulfur wicks / sulfur sticks are used for culling a very defensive bee colony. This lets you quickly remove the colony. This can be a solution when the colony is truly no longer manageable. Other options instead of culling with sulfur are letting the colony fly off or offering it for use in greenhouse horticulture.
Another reason for culling a bee colony with sulfur can be that a contagious, incurable disease is present in the colony. As a beekeeper, you do not want the colony to infect another colony. By culling with sulfur, the sick colony is quickly put out of its misery.
Instructions for culling a bee colony with sulfur:
1. When using a skep: The beekeeper places the skep over a hole in the ground where the sulfur is burned. Make sure the entrance is closed.
2. When using a hive: The beekeeper places an empty hive body on top of the colony with the sulfur to be burned in an empty tin can or similar. Make sure the entrances are well sealed. Within a few minutes the colony will be finished.
Price per sulfur stick / sulfur wick (1 piece). Once lit, the sulfur sticks burn out on their own.
(Warning: Only use these products with the necessary knowledge; the fumes are toxic to humans and other animals as well!)
